Gold & Ivory's conception was rather unconventional. In its original form, it began—and still exists—as a private, invitation-only club, centered on the culture of ancient Greece. Its founding principle, however, was that a dry, solely academic approach to the subject was doing a disservice to a civilization that was thoroughly influenced by the lived experience of its physical surroundings, its nature and landscape, all of which it richly mythologized. To unearth its secrets, the club explored ancient Greece in a deeply experiential way: discussions on ancient philosophy would be enjoyed over glasses of exquisite Greek wines set amidst sumptuous vineyards; and picnic lectures on art and architecture would be hosted in thyme and poppy fields surrounding ancient temples, hidden within the pristine Greek countryside. Knowledge and leisure, beautifully intertwined. 

 

In 2018, the club decided that its singular approach to the exploration of ancient Greece could be a boon for sophisticated travellers who visit Greece, but often miss out on the wealth of wisdom and inspiration that the country's historical sites can offer, due to the perceived banality of the idea of classic sightseeing.
